SOLD 60's Vegavox IV Plectrum, 4 Strings SALE PENDING
Price: $1,660.00 USD
Late '60s Vegavox IV Plectrum, 4 strings. Originally this model had dual coordinator rods, which were replaced at some point with a curly maple dowel stick. The neck is straight, the inlays clean and tight, the frets recently replaced. Plays and sounds great.
When I bought it in 2020 the seller wrote: "I just got the banjo back from Renee Karnes. She re-fretted, trued and polished the fingerboard. Head has been replaced. Inlays look great. The string nut was raised as the slots were worn. 6 of the rhinestones had fallen out and have been replaced. The banjo need[ed] a new bridge, strings and a setup. Other than that, it had nothing else done to it." As for the replacement dowel stick, "Renee says that was likely done to improve the tone as the wood dowel provides slightly better tone that the original dual co-rods."
Karnes also said that she may have worked on it before, because the arm rest was custom-made for restoration specialist Henry Lea, with whom she apprenticed prior to 1985 (see "LEA" stamp in the tenth photo.) In the ninth photo, note that a heel cap seems to be missing and there is a skinny brass rod that passes through the heel at the level of the dowel stick -- maybe to lock it in place? Who knows.
